How can a keto lifestyle help support weight management?

A ketogenic (keto) diet is a low-carb, moderate protein, higher-fat diet that can help you burn fat more effectively and can therefore help support with weight management.

Unlike other low-carb diets, which focus on protein, a true ketogenic diet centres on fat, which supplies as much as 90% of the daily calories.

The keto way of eating aims to force your body into using a different type of fuel. Instead of relying on sugar (glucose) that comes from carbohydrates (such as grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits), the keto diet relies on ketone bodies, a type of fuel that the liver produces from stored fat.

Ketones and ketoacids are alternative fuels for the body that are made when glucose is in short supply. They are made in the liver from the breakdown of fats. Ketones are formed when there is not enough sugar or glucose to supply the body’s fuel needs.

When following the keto diet, your body reaches a state of ketosis which typically takes a few days. It is then that your body starts losing fat which helps support the weight management.

In addition to this, many people following a keto lifestyle end up feeling fuller for longer due to eating high-fat foods and therefore reduce their calorie intake as they don’t experience hunger as much. Being in a calorie deficit is an effective weight loss tool and therefore supports the weight management goal that you may be trying to achieve.

Whilst initially a large weight loss can be seen/experienced when people first begin the keto diet, as with most ways of eating, this can slow down over time and begin to level out and is therefore an effective way to manage weight on a long-term basis. As with any diet, it is equally important to ensure you are exercising and drinking plenty of water to achieve the best results.
